Notes

Open-Faced Means Open-Faced

Unlike a traditional sandwich, a Scandinavian smørbrød is served open-faced with the toppings displayed on top rather than enclosed between two slices of bread.

More Topping Than Bread

A good Nordic shrimp sandwich should be generous with the shrimp. In true Scandinavian fashion, the topping is often more abundant than the bread beneath it.

Easy Variations

Try adding:

  • Sliced cucumber
  • Avocado
  • Sour cream
  • Hard-boiled egg
  • Chives
  • Radishes

Shrimp or Crayfish

Both shrimp and crayfish tails work beautifully in this recipe.

For the most authentic flavor, use cold-water shrimp when available.

Nordic Recipe Box Note

Norwegians and Danes may disagree about many things, but both appreciate a good open-faced sandwich piled high with seafood. Fresh shrimp, dill, lemon, and mayonnaise create a simple combination that has remained a Scandinavian favorite for generations.
