Norwegian Waffles (Vafler)
Soft, slightly sweet, and delicately flavored with cardamom, Norwegian waffles are a beloved treat enjoyed throughout the day. Unlike Belgian waffles, they're thinner, softer, and traditionally served with toppings like jam, sour cream, butter, sugar, or brown cheese.
Ingredients
- 3⅓ cups (400 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (100 g) sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp ground cardamom
- 1⅔ cups (400 ml) milk
- 3 large eggs
- 7 tbsp (100 g) butter, melted
Instructions
Step 1
In a large bowl, whisk together:
- Flour
- Sugar
- Baking powder
- Cardamom
Step 2
Gradually add the milk, a little at a time, whisking well between additions to create a smooth batter without lumps.
Step 3
Whisk in the eggs.
Add the melted butter and mix until fully incorporated.
Step 4
Allow the batter to rest for 30 minutes.
If the batter becomes too thick, add a splash of milk or water until it reaches a pourable consistency.
Step 5
Heat a waffle iron and lightly grease if needed.
Cook the waffles according to your waffle maker's instructions until golden brown.
Transfer finished waffles to a cooling rack to prevent them from becoming soggy.
Step 6
Serve warm with your favorite toppings.
