Notes

What Does the Name Mean?

Tilslørte Bondepiker literally translates to "Veiled Farmer's Daughters."

The dessert dates back to the 1800s and remains one of Norway's most famous traditional desserts.

Using Applesauce

Short on time?

You can substitute homemade apple compote with:

  • 1½ cups (350–400 ml) unsweetened applesauce
  • homemade apple puree

Adjust the sugar to taste depending on how sweet the applesauce is.

About the Breadcrumbs

Traditionally, the breadcrumbs are toasted in butter and sugar until crisp and caramelized.

This crunchy layer is what gives the dessert its distinctive texture.

Best Apples

Try using tart apples such as:

  • Granny Smith
  • Bramley
  • Gravenstein
  • Cortland

The slight acidity balances the sweetness beautifully.
